A Child’s Place values mixed-age classrooms and believes they afford children the optimal environment for growing both academically and socially. The multi-age grouping allows each child to develop on their own timeline, not tied to grade or age level expectations. It reaffirms our view of the child as capable and competent and reinforces our respect for each child. We have found through the years that children look for someone with a common interest. In the block corner, you will find 2 1/2, 3, 4, and 5 year olds all working together, not separated by age, each bringing their ideas and knowledge to the building activity. Each child has unique gifts to contribute to the learning process. Leaders emerge as self confidence grows regardless of age. Current research into early childhood education supports the mixed-aged grouping of children.
